Cemetery History
The first burial in Tunbridge Lutheran Scandinavian Evangelical Cemetery was held in August 1900 on three acres of land donated by Anfin Jelsing, six years later the first church was erected.
The cemetery was likely professionally surveyed and plotted for the first time in 1931. And in 1960 was officially registered with the North Dakota State Health Department.
The church ceased operations in 1988, but in 2013 volunteers organized the Tunbridge Cemetery Association. The Association oversaw cemetery maintenance and operations until 2019, when the Tunbridge Lutheran Church Preservation Society assumed those responsibilities.
Under the guidance of board member Dale Niewoehner, the Society has recorded all burials , located and marked all graves, and completed a new professional survey.
Today the cemetery provides a peaceful resting place more more than 117 souls. Every Memorial Day United States veterans and a sole Norwegian military veteran are honored. Burials are still being conducted here.
